History

Stand up paddle surfing (SUP), or in the Hawaiian language Hoe he’e nalu, is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage. It can be traced back to the early days of Polynesia. The sport is an ancient form of surfing, and began as a way for surfing instructors to manage their large groups of learner surfers, as standing on the board gave them a higher viewpoint, increasing visibility of what was going on around them - such as incoming swell. To begin with, this started with using a one-bladed paddle, whilst standing on a normal length surfboard. The popularity of the modern sport of SUP has its origination in the Hawaiian Islands. In the early 1960s, the Beach Boys of Waikiki would stand on their long boards, and paddle out with outrigger paddles to take pictures of the tourists learning to surf. This is where the term “Beach Boy Surfing”, another name for Stand Up Paddle Surfing, originates.

A dedicated free-ride/wave kite, the Fuse is the latest creation in 4 line performance from the North R and D team. The Fuse is brand new and will appeal to those riders who want a 4 line kite with a huge wind range, light, predictable feel and great jumping qualities.

The Fuse has a unique and simple Attack Control Bridle which gives the Fuse smooth, reactive steering especially when de-powered, making it a huge step forward in terms of manoeuvrability and directness on 4 lines.

Additionally the new AC bridle offers the ability to safely and completely de-power the Fuse on its back similar to the 5^th Element system.

Lots of low end power and extreme resistance to back stalling gives the Fuse great light wind capabilities while the AC bridle ensures direct de-power and a crisp bar feel in strong winds with pronounced push and pull power development.

The Fuse is constructed from the newest Techno Force canopy material d2 that is more resistant to tearing than conventional materials.

The third generation North Rebel 2010 freeride/wave kite is smooth, lively and features responsive steering even when De-powered making the North Rebel 2010 the ultimate kite for wave and freeriding in any conditions.

New for the Rebel 2010 is the loaded 5th line design, in addition to providing safety it gives the Rebel 2010 a short and aggressive power stroke that is up to 30% shorter than bridled kites.This means huge wind range and top-end performance for those super windy days. The Cabrinha Nomad is a kite for an advanced rider looking for performance in freestyle and waves. The kites turns off the wingtip and generates a lot of pull in kite loops. The Cabrinha Nomad is ideal for anyone looking to do huge unhooked wake style tricks while still having the safety and depower of the IDS bridle and control system. In the surf, the kite sits back in the pocket and pivots nicely so that it’s always in the right place. The Nomad absolutely floats as you rip down the line. The Nomad has great depower and turns fast. The Nomad handles the task of unhooked riding by delivering a constant steady powerband. When unhooked the kite continues to fly forward, making the power predictable during your tricks.

This season Cabrinha take durability head-on with the addition of transitional strut panel materials and reinforced LE closing seams. Cabrinha have reinforced the high load areas of the Nomad with a transitionally weighted material. This well-placed material acts as a buffer zone between the rigid strut areas and the canopy. The entire canopy of all Cabrinha kites are flat seamed and taped prior to sewing. This is 20% stronger than the freehand sewn method of a top stitching.
The leading edge construction of the Cabrinha Nomad now utilizes a hot melt glue tape in the leading edge closing seam for added strength. The entire trailing edge implements a two-ply of tough 70 gsm material for added durability and strength.
Full contact between the strut and the leading edge helps to ensure a rigid frame for the industry leading Cabrinha Nomad. The positive connection not only provides stability and fast turning while the kite is in flight but delivers added durability and rapid relaunch.
Cabrinha have also improved the bridle lines in the high wear sections, now featuring a corded bridle material for use in the sections that pass through the pulley.

Designed for jumping, racing and getting out in the lightest wind the ‘09 Rhino has the biggest low-end, best hang-time and best upwind speed of any kite in the North range. Less extreme sweep and a slightly flatter profile in the center and tips contribute to better high-wind stability, less drag in overpowered conditions and smooth, responsive turning.

Improved lift makes it easy to get big lofty jumps that are vertical and drag-free. The simplified Attack Control Bridle permits substantial changes in angle of attack (power/de-power) without any undesirable twists in kite geometry which results in a surprisingly crisp and responsive bar feel.

We did some of our own test riding and reckon that this is a great kite for Nelson conditions; it handles gusty South West winds easily and has lots of light wind power for the light sea breeze days. It relaunches really easily and the new bar had a clean and simple feel being free of pulleys and clutter, bar pressure is very light and best of all the New Cabrinha Switchblade IDS now has absolute depower which makes landing the kite by yourself safe and secure.
